The CBA has been reached and it’s said that the signing will take place this week. With the new agreement teams must submit a list of six players that are to be protected from the expansion draft. The list includes up to two core players which are untouchable.

What Does This Mean for Our ‘Dream’ Team?

It basically means there will be some talent up for grabs and if Atlanta is smart, they can establish a strong foundation to build on.

Sure it may not mean that marque players like Seattle’s Sue Bird and Phoenix’s Diana Taurasi will be available but that shouldn’t be their focus in the first year anyway.

Atlanta has an opportunity to be selective and patient when looking for the right talent. They need their core group first. A group that can play well together and are excited to be a part of something new and turning it into something great.

Where Will They Begin?

Atlanta needs everything from one to five beginning with the draft. With little talent in the guard position we can expect Atlanta to focus their draft efforts on filling the post with players like Laura Harper or Tasha Humphrey.

Tasha Humphrey plays for Georgia. She could be a given, as a recognizable name who could bring in local fans. On any other team she probably wouldn’t be a starter but she could turn into a key player for Atlanta if she adjusts quickly to the WNBA.

All in All…

Atlanta may get some duds and/or a diamond or two. All I need as a fan, is a group of players that I can get behind and believe in. A player or two that can lead the team into a promising future.
